People, SQUABBLE and QUARREL (as verbs) are words that we use very seldom - they're someone old. We use them when we want to be humorous or downplay the severity of a situation. Today we use ARGUE and FIGHT.

Elena, "picking A quarrel" only has on participant... somebody says or does things to antagonize the other person, who can either play into it or ignore it altogether. So it's not effective here.

Also, you don't "hold somebody from something," you KEEP them from DOING something.

PREVENT is a little too formal for this statement.

I agree, but one of the meanings of "поссориться" is "to fall out" - https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/поссориться
So, I can imagine that "удержать их от ссоры" can mean "keep from falling out"
