Bletting

Anna Annaadded a comment 3 years ago

Anna Annaadded a comment 3 years ago

Bletting is when you have something ripe (tomatoes, grapes) and want it softer but not rotten, you place it in a cool dry place and wait until it is so

Russ Sadded a comment 3 years ago

what's дозаривание?

Anna Annaadded a comment 3 years ago

Дозаривание is the process when delivered from other countries half-ripe veg and fruit (especially bananas, tomatoes, plums) are put into a special place with special temperature and pressure conditions and are processes with some mixture of ethylene and other gases until they are ripe and presentable for counters

Anna Annaadded a comment 3 years ago

Does this mean that in English both processes are the same? Because I would describe bletting as вяленье

🇺🇸 Uly 🐝added a comment 3 years ago

I have no idea because I’ve never heard this word before now.

Nick Uzhovadded a comment 3 years ago

вяленый = sun-dried

Nick Uzhovadded a comment 3 years ago

ripening
degreening

grumbleradded a comment 3 years ago

Anna Annaadded a comment 3 years ago

I just read up on this. According to Wikipedia, bletting is the name given to a process that happens naturally in fruits and is considered a stage of ripening, not something performed on them by industry. Degreening, on the other hand, is a chemical process performed on fruit that is ripe, but still has some green on the outside. I don’t know which one of these the Russian word designates, if either.

Anna Annaadded a comment 3 years ago

Ah i see! Thanks Uly, it’s degreening then )
