It might help to think of it like this: рас-про-стран-ять(ся). With the root being "СТРАН" and "РАС" and "ПРО" being the prefixes. -ЯТЬ or -ЯТЬСЯ being the verb ending.

Hi David, Uly is absolutely correct, "распространяться" means "to spread". For example: Слухи обычно распространяются очень быстро. - Rumors usually spread very fast.
