How to translate? (ru-en)

Более того, человек, впервые прочитавший о нем в этом посте, скорее сочтет вас неадекватным, чем полезет разбираться что этот пользователь там натворил.

  1. 1.

What's more, anybody reading about him in this post, would sooner consider you inappropriate than bother to work out what it is that this user did.

Moreover, someone who has read about him(her) in your comment, would rather think about you as an inadequate person, than try to find out what the other user had done.

Aleh, why do you have (her) - isn't нём masculine?

Aleh Laadded a comment 9 years ago

I assumed that нем" means "about the user" . Since we don't know if the user was a female or male, it could be either HIM or HER.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 9 years ago

But isn't the fact that they use нем an indication that the person is exclusively male?

Aleh Laadded a comment 9 years ago

No. Him(her) refers to "этот пользователь ", which can be of any gender even though the word "пользователь" is masculine. I doubt if feminine form "пользовательница" ever existed in Russian. All these words "врач, доктор, ученый,..пользователь" require clarification if they mean a female, like "женщина-врач". So it is similar to English in this sense. If you say "A doctor entered the room", it also can mean either a female or male. Unless it is specified as in "A female doctor entered the room", I would assume that the doctor most probably is a male, but I wouldn't be sure about it.

Ok, thanks. That makes sense.
