Hit, attain, arrive at глаголы-синонимы в этом формальном смысле.
Значение и регистр речи в подчиненном предложении "to realize their ambitions" определяет регистр и значение сказуемого в главном.
Зачем верить в значение фразы, лучше её разобрать, что она есть на самом деле в исходном языке. " Тут такое !" не является фразеологическим выражением (idiom). Это просторечие, состоящее из наречия места и существительного. Оно многозначное. Подставлять вместо него можно, что угодно, и с каким угодно смыслом, лишь бы передать эмоцию от чего-то необычного. Поэтому, само исходное предложение не естественное из-за сочетания формального регистра и просторечий.
В формальном русском языке есть фразеологема "Ужас, что такое !". В переводе привёл регистр к формальному.

Thank you, Alexander, but we have become accustomed to WS's rants and bullshit translations. The way he sees it, he could teach ME English - not the other way around :)

WS: the colloquial use of "hit" means to drop into a place or several places to "try them out" as it were. So if you're looking for a specific perfume for your wife, you could "hit all the boutiques in town" until you find it; or if you're out for a night of fun with your friends, you can "hit a few bars" and then go home; you can even come to the US for the summer and "hit a few states" on your trip. But you CANNOT "hit the big city" to fulfill your dreams, because that would require you MOVING there - and permanently relocating to a place is NOT the meaning of "hit" in its colloquial usage.

Furthermore, I now understand perfectly well what "a тут такое" means. It simply means "and then this (happened)" - it's that simple :) And both "it" in English and "такое" in Russian are made clear by the context as to what exactly happened, and, since this isn't mentioned in the sentence I posted, there's no need to fabricate something as contrived as "and things in it boggled their minds." So do yourself a favor and remove that preposterous "translation" and don't embarrass yourself further.

Finally, I have trouble understanding your Russian. If your English is as good as you purport, you should have no problem addressing me in English. You seem to have a lot of theories about English, but can't seem to put them into practice - that doesn't make sense in any scientific, logical or general sense. So let's continue this discussion in English, yes?

I wonder why there is the period after the original phrase, I believe it should be three periods or an exclamation mark. My point is that in spoken speech "а тут такое(!)" sound quite idiomatic and expresses great surprise of something unusual or awful happening. That's why I'm still in doubt the initial meaning of the phrase having a quite and calm period at the end, both in Russian and English 'and then this'. Please tell me if the latter also brings the surprise I just pointed?

Alex, I believe that the level of disappointment or astonishment is relative. A person who feels dejected by life and isn't surprised when bad things happen to them, might state this quite matter-of-factly as just another example of their horrible reality: "Nothing ever seems to work out for me. For example, I save and save money to buy a new car. I find the exact model and color I want, drive it for one day and then this. I give up :( "

But in general, yes, I agree that in most cases this phrase refers to something that takes you for a loop and elicits an exclamation point. Otherwise, it leaves the speaker with a sense of bewilderment and merits an ellipsis. It's all a matter of interpretation, but the meaning is the same: something unexpected comes along out of the blue and changes things for better or for worse.
