All telescope designs produce upside-down images, but the refractors and the Schmidt-Cassegrains are usually used with an accessory called a star diagonal, which fits just in front of the eyepiece.

However, Saturn's rings are the only ones you can see in any backyard telescope, and once seen, that tiny image is truly unforgettable.

You need at least a 4 inch (100 mm) telescope to see many of the star systems in this area.

Electronic equipment used with a modest telescope can produce superb pictures.
Elektronische Kameras liefern bereits mit kleinen Teleskopen hervorragende Bilder.

But especially in years following big volcanic eruptions, the shadow can become so dark that the Moon virtually disappears, even when seen through a telescope.

To keep it in view, you must move the telescope a little in both directions every few seconds, which can be awkward.

This radio telescope image shows a quasar (the central dot) emitting streams of particles (only one jet is clearly visible), which reach to over one million light-years from the centre.

Add a motor to the polar axis and the telescope can follow objects automatically, leaving your hands free.

Most basic telescopes accept only 24.5 mm diameter eyepieces, but if you are prepared to spend a bit more, look for a telescope that takes the better grade of 31.8 mm diameter eyepieces.

With the telescope tracking the stars, they take a multiple exposure that captures the Moon in stages as it moves through Earth's shadow.

The image, which was produced while the telescope was being assembled, provides a view of a universe which is completely invisible to telescopes operating in the ranges of visible and infrared light.
