Note of the day (en-en)
“Trust me, you can dance” – Vodka It’s the weekend, which means it’s time for a little fun! For us Americans, drinking is pretty straightforward. However, when I came to Moscow I was introduced to Russian alcohol etiquette. Just as in other European countries, Russia has countless traditions and superstitions, but today I’d like to share with you a few popular Russian traditions centered around alcohol. 1. One should not put a glass with alcohol back on the table. This refers to shot-type strong alcohol which you are supposed to drink at once. Wine, cocktails and beer are meant to be sipped, so they do not fall under this rule. 2. Traditionally alcohol is poured out to all the people present, though they are not required to drink. 3. One should not make a long interruption between the first and second shots. 4. The latecomer must drink a full glass. (this is referred to as штрафной or “penality”) 5. Filling a glass being held in the air is frowned upon. 6. It is considered bad luck to make a toast with an empty glass. 7. It is considered bad luck to put an empty bottle back on the table when it’s finished. And the list goes on! I can honestly say that I have adopted all of these rules of etiquette and when I go home I always make sure my family sticks to the rules. I especially love the Russian tradition of making long, meaningful and all-encompassing toasts - which can go on for the entire night! Can you think of any other interesting rules of Russian alcohol etiquette? Does your culture have some type of tradition when it comes to drinking alcohol? Let me know below!
