To outdo - перещеголять, превзойти

Having Uly's translation, I started thinking that there's another meaning.)

Лена, не могу с тобой согласиться. В твоём переводе нарушена логика. Когда кто-то хочет быть ЛУЧШЕ другого, это и есть то, что он стремится ПЕРЕЩЕГОЛЯТЬ/ПРЕВЗОЙТИ его. При чём здесь тогда «ДАЖЕ ЕСЛИ»?
Вот в wooordhunt нашла, якобы, американское значение «СТАВИТЬ В ТУПИК». Это и ближе к переводу Улия, и логичнее, на мой взгляд.

Это зависит от контекста. Если друзья в чем-то соревнуются, каждый не хочет обидеть при этом другого, показавшись лУчшим.
На мой взгляд, все логично, и словари дают это значение:

Elena, by the definitions you posted, "be the best" and "outdo one another" would mean exactly the same thing, and are, logically, the crux of any competition. So then why do they have "even if it means"? Because, there's another nuance to "outdo" which is to stoop to harmful and even unscrupulous tactics in order to make sure that the other party goes down in defeat. That's why my "translation" is so wordy - because I'm trying to inject this nuance into the Russian rendition (obviously not very successfully).
