In that case, Elena’s translation is out. Grumbler’s doesn’t fit the context. Lena’s is too wordy and unidiomatic in this context.

Actually, Grumbler’s isn’t too bad if he emphasizes the SOMEthing. (Russian хоть surfaces as stressed SOME in English)

Grumbler, yours also sounds like an accusation (which maybe this IS - I don't know). You can turn it around by adding SURELY to make it clear that you're only suspecting they know: But surely you know SOMEthing about this, don't you?

In that case, it good to use COME ONE and SURELY in this context. Otherwise, it sounds like a direct accusation.

Это очень плохо иметь на форуме одного нэйтива. Было бы хотя бы два - я уверена, что число переводов Ули значительно бы уменьшилось.

Довольно часто он собирает все выражения, которые только может подобрать. Как в этом посте. Широко они используются в обычной речи или нет - не важно. Другие нэйтивы на некоторые его переводы только брови поднимают - "нет, не использовали; нет, даже в голову бы не пришло так сказать, и т.д".
Да уж куда им до профессионального лингвиста(?), который, кажется, знает только один термин - unidiomatic))
Что далеко ходить? Вот его первый перевод в этом посте. Ну, ребята, живущие в англоязычных странах, ну кто из вас слышал такое в обычном разговоре? Кто это использовал сам???

Да, Лена, согласна, чем больше нейтивов, тем лучше. А Вы знаете, где их взять? Я нет. Тогда, возможно, не число переводов Улия уменьшилось бы, а число хороших (и разных) переводов на Лингво увеличилось?
Я думаю, если Вы критикуете переводы одного нейтива, будьте добры привести имена других нейтивов, которые «брови поднимают». А ещё лучше - контакты в интернете, чтобы Улий мог напрямую к ним обратиться и обсудить спорные вопросы. Иначе Ваша критика - пустое сотрясение воздуха.
Далее, Вы позволяете себе усомниться в том, что Улий профессиональный лингвист. Лично у меня желания п проверить подлинность его диплома не возникало хотя бы потому, что когда я на ЛЛ появилась, я почувствовала, с каким уважением к нему относятся бывалые пользователи. Одна из них - Ольга Благова (нынче Хардшток), прожившая в Лондоне около 10 лет и бывшая замужем за британцем. Уж её-то в отличие от многих из нас не обманешь. К Вашему сведению Улий был или является [не закончено]

активным и пользующимся авторитетом пользователем различных платформ для изучения языков.

I would love it if there were another native English speaker on the site. The problem is that being a native speaker doesn’t qualify you to interpret Russian texts. Even I sometimes have to have someone explain them to me before I can translate them. Another problem is that just because you speak a language on a native level doesn’t mean that you know WHY you say the things you say. As a linguist and a student of Russian, I have had occasion to break down my own language and more specifically the emotion and nuances that lay behind the words. The reason I offer so many variants is that I don’t want to limit my translation to just things that I would personally say. Different people have different ways of expressing the same thing. However, I stand by each and every one of my translations and if someone qualified questions them and wants to discuss them, I’m more than happy to comply.

But I believe the real problem here is that I didn’t like your translation. I’m sorry, but it just doesn’t express the emotion that the context dictates. In other words, it’s grammatical, but not idiomatic. Not something a native would say in that situation. AT ALL is out of place. It doesn’t express any suspicion that the listener is holding back information. It’s just words. Sorry.

Uly, Ι can't but agree with you. Hearts on here have nothing to do with the quality of translations. Hopefully those who take their language learning seriously will tell correct translations from faulty ones. And those who tend to keep their ridiculous translations no matter what... Well, Konstantin Stanislavsky, an outstanding Russian actor and theater director once said: Любите искусство в себе, а не себя в искусстве. So, those people apparently "love themselves in the language" rather than "loving the language in themselves".

Here, I looked on Google Books and found only one hit. Something written in 1949 in some kind of gazette which I can’t see. It looks like an interrogation during a trial.
