STRIPES, as a punishment, especially in religious contexts, refers to being whipped.
Thank you, Uly. You are right. But in Russian the word "порка" is used mostly about punishment of children or slaves (it has some humiliating connotation). I think it would be better to use "побои" here. It sounds more cruelly than humiliating. Moreover, порка is a single action while побои can be a regular or a recurring one.
"Он претерпел побои" значит, что его там били, возможно, регулярно.
As long as it refers to being beaten with a WHIP which leaves STRIPES on one’s back, then yes.
Also, there should be some humiliation because was whipped for his faith.
