My honest friend answered "She was your love, but now she became my wife".
Друг ответил искренний:
— Была тебе любимая, —
А стала мне жена.

Thank you! But I couldn’t really understand the meaning of “А стала мне женя». Because after this text, the lyrics continues “Я спросил у ясеня, я спросил у тополя, я спросил у осени...». He kept asking to others. Does the text have the nuance that his любимая passed away?😢
Sorry, *Стала мне жена
Ok, I just read the whole text in Russian. The character (the singer) has been asking Where is my love from trees, autumn, clouds, the moon. In the end, the singer asks a friend. To me, it's not 100% clear if the friend is a human being or some kind of nature's entity. Assuming a friend is a real man, then that means the friend got married to the singer's love while the singer was looking for her. Or the singer was procrastinating to get married and the fried seized the opportunity. In other words, the friend's response is "although she used to be your love, and now she is my wife (sucker!)". So, the main character lost his love or his friend just stole her. We don't know all circumstances. Could be also an act of betrayal. Because the singer says my sincere and true friend. In reality, that sincere and true friend just got married to the singer's love. I don't think someone had passed away in that song. It's just about the love he had but did not manage to keep.
Thank you for reading the whole lyrics!!!
Now I finally understood the whole meaning! It’s 😭 sad! It feels like this song is about the situation after the war😢
No war. The song under question is from the iconic melodrama/tragecomedy The Irony of Fate that was shot in 1975.
