Russians always have trouble with these verbs - study my translations carefully. RECOMMEND and SUGGEST take a subjective phrase and DON’T normally mention the recipient of the recommendation or suggestion since they are mentioned in the subjunctive phrase: We recommended THAT HE READ this book. (Not: We recommended to him to read this book). Or in another example: “I told him I wanted to leave my wife, so he recommended a good divorce attorney.” (Not: recommended to me - it’s obvious from the context that the recommendation is for me). And finally, in imperatives: “Please recommend/suggest a good book to read on vacation.” (Not: recommend/suggest (to) me. Again, the person giving the imperative is the recipient of the information, so they need not be mentioned outright).
