Uly, твой перевод неплох, и всё же высший пилотаж , как мне кажется, избегать слова «выглядит» в подобных предложениях.

We can perfectly use 'выглядит' if the speaker is observing the place or showing/describing it to someone. However, if the speaker just talking about the place in general, then 'выглядит' can be skipped.

I don’t understand, obviously the girl LOOKED out of the car and based on what they saw, concluded that they must be in a dangerous place because it LOOKED dangerous, no?

I started doubting my reasoning and looked up место выглядит/место выглядело both in Google books ngram viewer and нац. корпус русского языка - just a few hits. I'm not saying it doesn't exist - I just wanted to point out that there are some better options when it comes to the translation of "the place looked", especially when it's followed by some counterparts of опасно.
I feel like Russians tend to leave выглядит off in many cases. Instead of saying место выглядит шикарно/красиво/неприглядно/жутко, they'll say (кажется/вроде) место шикарное/красивое/непринлядное/жуткое, even though that may sound too categorical. Again, all that doesn't mean место выглядит is incorrect. 😉
