Also VARIOUS = different, but not necessarily many; SEVERAL = different AND many 🙂

For me 'several' isn't necessarily 'many'. Three is 'several', but not that many.

Several is many in the mind of the speaker. If you take your child to the dentist and he turns out to have three cavities and you consider that a lot, you say he had several cavities. If you don't consider that a lot of cavities, you choose another word.
