Alex, if you say YOU YOURSELF, this implies that the thing you're looking at is made of stone too. I don't think that's the case. "If you touch a leper, you yourself might get leprosy."

I guess this is the case, as far as I understand the Russian text. Something like the object looks like a stone, totally drunk, “got stoned" or something.

I think you’re confusing stone with stoned.

Uly,
Can’t catch what I confused. Please explain.

You’re confusing stone as an element with stoned as a state of inebriation.

Although Соня Богуславская provided the whole phrase, it's quite unclear what that object or person was to look at. So, as usual, I had to turn on my imagination and pictured a situation to match the text to translate. And it came out like this:
"Have you seed Jack today? He's been standing on the corner of 4th and Main since yesterday's evening, got stoned as much as to be unable to move and even to say a word, just looking straight forward as if seeing nothing before him. It's a wonder that he hasn't fallen since then, he's just standing motionless like a stone statue. They say if you take a look at him, you yourself might turn into stone."
So, I took it as a pun. Perhaps, there was a quite different meaning, most likely something from a fairy-tale, but since I didn't have any wider context, I just translated the phrase plainly.

Wow, what an imagination! To be frank, when I read the original post, I thought of a mythological creature, of which it is said that if you look at him, you'll turn to stone. I think your version is a bit of a stretch, to assume that he's made of stone (or stoned).

Alexander Аkimovpublicó un comentario 8 years ago

However, your "mythological" version looks "realistic"😜
...if not in Russia🤪
