One thing is to BE (way) ahead OF... and another thing is for something to PUT you ahead. “If you’re going to take Russian this year, you should teach yourself the alphabet before school starts - that will put you way ahead.” (=give you a huge advantage). “Having rich parents puts you way ahead of those students who have to go to school AND work in order to live.” (=give you a huge advantage)
I have to agree with Uly. Put you way ahead means to give you a huge advantage, but be way ahead means to be smarter, better than someone.

Which by all accounts means to make someone more intelligent, experienced and informed than others. That’s not what this means. It just means to have a bigger advantage; and WAY ahead, means to have a huge advantage.
