I don't like "in case" because I expect the message to be generated once and not be repeated if the balance remains negative.

I hate disagreeing with you, but in most (all?) examples this means 'if the account is overdrawn', i.e. is in the state of being overdrawn.
The message is generated at the instant when some transaction makes the account overdrawn.
