It did happen yesterday, but it happened yesterday before he arrived, so it’s the past perfect.

Are you saying that the sentence “what happened yesterday before you arrive” is correct. If so, the first part has simple past (I already know what it is !!! )))) but the second part has present. Is it all correct?

that was a typo. it should be “what happened yesterday before he arrived.” But you can’t use ARRIVED with “by the time,” you have to use WHAT HAD HAPPENED by the time he arrived.

In that case you would say: Her eyes are red. What happened? She’s been crying.
