Actually, the phrase A LIGHTBULB WENT OFF IN MY HEAD means that it turned on — you had a revelation, saw the light. (Don't ask me why)

Why is it that when a lightbulb "goes off" it *stops* shining, but when an alarm "goes off" it *starts* sounding? 🤔

Usually, when a lightbulb stops working, we say that it goes/burns OUT.
"The lightbulb burned out" — I believe it's closer in meaning to "Лампочка перегорела", no? Like when it breaks beyond repair. But what if it just gets turned off? When someone turns the switch off then will the lightbulb go *off*? Or will it go *out*?
Also, if an alarm goes *off* when it's triggered, then what does it do when it's reset back to normal state? It goes *on*..? 🤯
When someone hits the switch, the lightbulb goes OUT. When an alarm is reset, it’s ENGAGED (again).
Light bulb goes off is used to say that a person suddenly understands something or has a great idea. After thinking about the problem for several days, a light bulb went off in her head, and she knew how to solve it.

A switch is flipped, and the lighting is turned off.
