So, the question is "did they open the door before, or after it started to rain?"

Holy Molyadded a comment 8 years ago

After, obviously. "Once" as a conjunction means "as soon as/when/at the very same moment as". So basically your translation in Russian would be "Как только они открыли дверь, пошёл дождь". А в оригинале - не успели они открыть дверь..., то есть они ещё не открыли дверь, а дождь уже пошёл.

Aleh Laadded a comment 8 years ago

Вы не правы. Во всех ваших примерах сначала произошло действие в первой части, а потом , почти одновременно, второе действие.

ПОдумайте о логике следующего предложения. Не успел я приехать на курорт, как пошел купаться.

Aleh Laadded a comment 8 years ago

так что, дверь они открыли до того как пошел дождь. Пусть даже на мгновение, но раньше. Отсюда и мой перевод.

Логика в предложении "не успел я приехать на курорт, как пошёл купаться" вообще-то только одна - так можно сказать только в переносном смысле.

Aleh Laadded a comment 8 years ago

Переносной смысл здесь либо не причём, либо распространяется и на приведённые вами примеры.

And I have nothing against your use of "scarcely", even though it sounds funny. As if English Queen were speaking. )

And if you try to back translate into Russian your version(s), you'll see that the meaning is completely the same as in my version: First , the door was opened, and next, it started to rain.
