1) здесь я немного сомневаюсь во временах, но у вас тема все равно, похоже, на предлоги: we were swimming in the river and the grandmother was sitting AT the river ON the grass.
2) come back - это вернуться. Вообще глагол come имеет направленность на вас, а не в сторону, поэтому "We went to the city in the evening".
