I can understand “swipe” or “contactless”, but why no Earth “transgender” becomes a word of the year?

Quite frankly, this Top 10 Collins Words of the Year are not so exciting for me. The following 3 are not the blast at all, I think:
Swipe (Verb)
To move a finger across a touchscreen on an electronic device as a means of inputting a command.
Contactless (Adj)
Referring to payment systems which use RFID technology and do not require the customer's signature or pin number.
Transgender (Adj)
Of or relating to a person whose gender identity does not fully correspond to the sex assigned to them at birth.

Right, Igor, I'd ask the same question. This is weird.
As far as I'm concerned, Collins chooses the word of the year according to the friequency of usage. So we can suggest these words to be most frequently used through the year by various media as well as by people.
yep. weird.
