These range from deserts, mangroves, wetlands, coral reefs, tropical rainforests to frozen tundra, and from rural areas inhabited by indigenous communities to heavily populated urban environments.

Since Statoil found the first coral reef at 70°N in 1982, cooperation with the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research (IMR) has identified a number of coral reefs off the Norwegian coast.

The stony reef-building corals provide shelter and substratum for a wide variety of organisms, and with their calcium carbonate skeletons help form the physical basis of the reef.
