More dictionary magic! It’s correct, but it’s a completely different concept. The social scale is the ratio between the social classes in any country. The social ladder refers to one’s place in society, usually within a specific community, like a city, and namely among its elite. You can climb one, metaphorically, but not the other. Why that dictionary has them together is beyond me because they are not interchangeable.
