"возраст - это просто вопрос начал" - звучит неестественно и почти невозможно понять что имеется в виду, даже в контексте.

I think you may have misconstrued my feeble attempt to explain myself in Russian, so I’ll paraphrase it in English: аge is just a matter (вопрос) of (experiencing/making) new beginnings (новых начал) (=don’t look at death as if things are ending, focus on the new things that you are starting as you get older…)

С "по крайней мере" я согласен.
Но смысл фразы "аge is just a matter of (experiencing/making) new beginnings" до меня так и не доходит. Я понимаю объяснение в скобках, но, увы, никак не могу связать его с самой фразой...
И число в оригинале единственое - beginning

“age was just about beginning” - the past form WAS is used here to quote what he said to himself as reported speech. “just about beginning” means “just about beginning things (as opposed to ending them)” which we know is not true, but (at least) that’s what he told himself to make himself feel better. The plural “beginnings“ isn’t used here because it refers to the collective act of beginning, starting things. Similarly, we say “there was a lot of eating and drinking at the party” (not eatingS, drinkingS)
