LIMBO here means CHAOS. They don't know their place because they have to live with one parent and go stay with the other, or are pulled out of their schools and moved to a new city by one parent, or are made to feel guilty for loving one parent who is being demonized by the other parent...
I understand the meaning and I thought никому ненужные is what "in LIMBO" means. Let me think.
