Что касается эссе-сочинения, то здесь есть некоторые нюансы. Когда я слышу второе, то оно немедленно ассоциируется у меня с письменной работой на русском языке и специфическими требованиями к ней, предъявляемыми в русскоязычных школах. А вот, например, письменную работу на экзаменах по английскому языку в России традиционно называют эссе, что подразумевает некоторое сходство её формата с форматом эссе в англоязычных странах. То есть, существует сложившаяся традиция разграничивать эти два понятия, а уж хороша она или плоха, судить не берусь.
