To me, it’s exactly the other way around - after you внушишь себе, что ты ни на что не годишься, you start подавлять в себе внутренний порыв искать что-то новое. Correct me if I am wrong, please.

Yes, it means to downgrade your potential and self-esteem.

The point is деградировать. isn’t about self-esteem. It’s about our personality as a whole.

It’s more about your potential, viewing yourself as less than you’re capable of.

In Russian, the ones who деградируют, they normally don't care about anything including their potential. 🤔
