Alex, SCENT is incorrect there.

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 5 years ago

Tatiana, Do YOU smell spring in the air too?

Alexander Ptpublicó un comentario 5 years ago

Uly, the context is not obvious. Thus, my version is possible.

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 5 years ago

Alexander, your version is possible for someone who has no concept of context.

Uly, I would never think about saying “scent the spring” myself but out of curiosity I’ve looked into my dictionary and it states that “to begin to feel that smth exists or about to happen very soon”. By the context you mean that it has to be an event or action, not spring or a season of a year, right?

Correct. If you look at the Ngram I published above, there’s no instance of SCENT, in any tense, with SPRING. Only SMELL.

Thank you! Now I see that to scent is more like чуять in Russian, rather than чувствовать запах. Чую, скандал будет - I scent a scandal
