Anna Sevastyanovaadicionou o comentário 7

Anna Sevastyanovaadicionou o comentário 7

Thank you, Anna, I keep forgetting about double negatives in Russian! 🤨

The speaker's attitude is: "Why don't you ever smile? Is it because there's nobody in your life to make you smile... or perhaps there IS in fact somebody, but they don't know how to make you smile?" I used вдруг to render "perhaps" - is that not the right usage?

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 7

By the way, the speaker isn't saying this because she's smiling, he's wondering if she has anything in her life to bring her joy, like children, dogs, a husband, etc. If she were smiling when he said this, he would have said "Who IS MAKING you smile." But he uses the plain, general verb to refer to the existence or absence of someone to make her smile.

I hope that makes sense.

Однако, не было бы это "is there anybody who makes you smile" по-английски?

It's hard to explain. Let me illustrate it in a snippet:

A conversation between two women coworkers:
Betty: You're so pretty - why are you still single, if you don't mind me asking.
Anne: Thanks. I don't know... I guess I'm not the marrying kind.
Betty: That seems kind of sad... nobody to share your joys with, coming home to an empty house every day, nobody to grow old with. Who encourages you when you want to give up? Who stands by you when the whole world is against you? Who makes you smile?... or is nobody up for the job? (=are you so picky that nobody is good enough -or- able to do those things for you?)

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 7

BTW, I'm not arguing for вдруг, i'm just showing you where I got it)))

grumbleradicionou o comentário 7 лет назад

I see.
ATM I don't think that I can explain why this doesn't work in this case. Maybe later. Or somebody else?

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 7

No problem

Elena Bogomolovaadicionou o comentário 7

Uly, these translations in context.reverso may be correct in some context, but generally nobody would translate 'perhaps" and "maybe' by " 'вдруг'. The word вдруг suggests some guess and surprise.

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 7

Ok, thanks.

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 7

Elena, just out of curiosity, how would use translate вдруг here?:

Если ее отдать, придется объяснить, откуда она у меня, сказал Гарри. И Фреду с Джорджем влетит от Филча.
А вдруг Сириус Блэк знает тайные ходы в замок? не унималась Гермиона. Нужно предупредить учителей!

Elena Bogomolovaadicionou o comentário 7

- If I give it, I'll have to explain where I had gotten it, - Garry said. - And Fred and George will get it hot from Filch.
- But what if Sirius Blake knows secret entrances into the castle? - Hermiona was persistent. - We ought to warn the masters!

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 7

Aha, so it’s WHAT IF. That makes sense! Thank you

Elena Bogomolovaadicionou o comentário 7

So, Uly, do you agree that 'perhaps' and 'maybe' aren't fitting here?

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 7

Absolutely. I agree and I understand why))
