I actually think that the не in несколько, since it isn’t really negative, is close to ANY and сколько is tantamount to “number” in this sense. So it’s like the perfect counterpart of “any number of.”

“He shouldn’t be surprised that I fired him - I gave him any number of warnings.” = several warnings

“Он не должен удивляться, что я уволил его - Я несколько раз предупреждал его

“Он не должен удивляться, что я уволил его - Я несколько раз предупреждал его = несколько предупреждений
