Have + дополнение + инфинитив write - это факт, have + дополнение + герундий writing - процесс.

(He’s such a good teacher that) by the end of the semester, they are able to write... ( we use HAVE in this sense to express how well someone teaches): “My brother owns a bakery. When my wife and I went on our second honeymoon last month, we left the kids with him for a week. By the time we came back home, he had them making their own cakes, pies and cookies without any help.” (=he had already successfully taught them how to bake)
