My boyfriend and I were renting an apartment; things were going fine, but we really wanted a dog. We adopted the tiny mutt from the (local) shelter it was quiet and smart. Naturally, we didn’t tell the landlord. We thought we’d wing it for a while and then figure something out. But the neighbors narked us out, and a week later the landlord blew in like a hurricane, raised hell, and kicked us out. We were in shock, frantically scanning ads and getting doors slammed in our face left and right. We were LIVING OUT OF OUR SUITCASES, short on money, and couch-surfing with friends. The little dog was with us the whole time. Then, sitting in the park one day, we seriously thought about giving her up, but our hearts ached at the thought she was already ours/one of us. And right then, the phone rang... it was our old landlord. He was like, “I’m so sorry. Please come back. The tenants who DIDN'T have a dog, trashed their apartment two weeks later.” We almost cried from (the) joy.

1adicionou o comentário 2 meses atrás

“The tenants trashed their apartment two weeks later.”
Uly, why “later” if they had supposedly been doing that for two weeks?🧐

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 2 meses atrás

Because apparently I misunderstood. So he meant that the tenants who DIDN’T have a dog have been trashing their apartment for two weeks?

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 2 meses atrás

Also, since разнести is perfective, I thought it was a one-time thing.

So he meant that the tenants who DIDN’T have a dog have been trashing their apartment for two weeks?

It's not a one-time thing,

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 2 meses atrás

How interesting! Thank you)) So it’d be fair to say that… the tenants who DIDN’T have a dog, (totally) trashed their apartment over a two-week span/in the space of two weeks?

It took the tenants ... two weeks to (totally) trash the apartment

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 2 meses atrás

Aha! It took them ALL OF two weeks…

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadicionou o comentário 2 meses atrás

Yes, the perfective aspect IS used to talk about completed actions with a focus on the result. They could’ve also said
