А может быть, "нет чтобы сказать - I wish you'd said" или I'd rather you said...

Tatiana Melihovaadicionou o comentário 9 years ago

а почему 'can I', а не 'may I'?

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadicionou o comentário 9 years ago

Irina Mayorovaadicionou o comentário 9 years ago

+++Galia: HOW ABOUT...ING is the way to go here.

Галина Палагутаadicionou o comentário 9 years ago

A: Borya, can I borrow your car till tonight?

B: Um... alright, if you really need it...

A: Oh come on! How about saying, "Sure you can, dear sis!" This would be music to my ears.

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 9 years ago

Elena: ...if you REALLY or ABSOLUTELY need it. This is a pivotal element in the dialogue because it shows that Borya isn't being magnanimous with his sister.

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 9 years ago

You had it right in your translation. In this case How about "Sure..." is very good 😊

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 9 years ago

However the "music to my ears" translation is a bit of a stretch. And the SHOULD'VE SAID is a little unnatural in this context.

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 9 years ago

I'll keep that in mind.

Галина Палагутаadicionou o comentário 9 years ago

Да, и почему "music to my ears" is a bit of a stretch в этом контексте?

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 9 years ago

"Music to my ears" is used when somebody suggests something that you incidentally really want to do, or really want. It shows that you are delighted that you're both thinking along the same lines. Plus, the brother didn't say no, so it's kind of out of place.

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 9 years ago

It doesn't mean "that sounds nice", it means "Now THAT'S what I wanted to hear!"

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 9 years ago

Irina, yes, theoretically there's a difference between CAN and MAY, but in the spoken language most people disregard them and just use CAN.

Галина Палагутаadicionou o comentário 9 years ago

Aha, now I've fully grasped it -- correct?

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 9 years ago

Correct! 👍🏼

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 9 years ago

Is нет чтобы the same as нет бы?

Elena Bogomolovaadicionou o comentário 9 years ago

Uly, thank you, I've added "really". Is the remaining workable?

Галина Палагутаadicionou o comentário 9 years ago

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 9 years ago

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 9 years ago

Elena: If you're going to use "would've been," then you should use "didn't" in the first part.

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 9 years ago

+Elena: even though we really don't use Eh like this. We would sooner say Hey at the beginning of an utterance.

Elena Bogomolovaadicionou o comentário 9 years ago

Thank you, Uly, I've corrected it)

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 9 years ago

Perfect!
