А от перестановки слагаемых, сумма меняется?)

if you encountered me - если Вы меня встретили, If I encountered you - если я Вас встретил. Смысл все же немного разный )

Я тоже рассматривала youcame across me, посмотрела в словаре, а там, якобы, вступать в интимную связь на сленге. Подумала, может двусмысленность получиться.

А вот рифмой как-то не получается перевести

I didn't see what Igor wrote, but I don't like any of these translations (especially AL's. "My way in direction opposite to yours" isn't English.) The test of a good translation is that when a native reads it, it makes perfect sense, and reading all your translations, I still have no inkling of what the Russian says. I want to help you all figure this out, but you have to explain to me what it means first. Can someone paraphrase it very clearly and succinctly for me?

I'll try: If you see me going towards you, that means, we can't go in the same direction.

In other words, it essentially means that if you're not walking beside me, we are not on the same path?

Я думаю, да. Здесь не буквальное значение. Может, просто эффектная фраза. Вообще, оригинальное стихотворение всё построено на противоречиях. А вот о смыслах можно поспорить. Ал имел в виду, что это Игорь первый дал ему ссылку. В начале ветки тоже она есть. Если захочешь, почитаешь.)

Улий, ты абсолютно прав. Исходник можно перефразировать: Если ты не идёшь рядом, у нас разные пути. Добавь свой перевод, пожалуйста!)

something happened and if it happened, it means that... Incorrect?

Because to me this sounds like a irrealis eventuality: it's sets a hypothetical situation with a concrete assessment. Compare it to something like this: "If you find yourself making excuses to not go to work every day, you probably hate your job." In this context, one could never say "if you found yourself making excuses…"
