You can interprete that this way provided it implies that he has an outstanding ability to dig up some shocking, sensational etc. facts, what the Russian expression means. Нюх на новости = чутьё на сенсации. The words "mundane" and «everyday» in your first example made this translation impossible.

Tatiana, actually MUNDANE was the key to my example - I meant that a good reporter can look at what seems mundane to other people with different eyes and make it newsworthy. But I admit it was a confusing example. I think this last one is much better. Thanks again!
