Улий, with all due respect, since you have been very meticulous correcting other's people translations, quibbling over translations/punctuation, you should know that it is a TV not tv.

⁌ ULY ⁍добавил комментарий 6 years ago

(1) nobody quibbles over TV vs tv here (2) it’s actually a MOVIE she’s watching and not tv.

⁌ ULY ⁍добавил комментарий 6 years ago

And quibbling and being meticulous for the sake of TEACHING and HELPING is an honorable thing.

⁌ ULY ⁍добавил комментарий 6 years ago

And I quote: “TV (caps) does give more importance than intended. I do understand the initialism, but argue that this is a word in transition and would apply the same principles as with a hyphen. Example: weekend began life as week's end, then week-end, and finally weekend, one word. The use of TV is not actually a initialism -- it does not stand for distinct words, as does RCMP or FBI or government departments; of FIMA; or any number of others. The original word is television (no caps); and no initials are even implied. It is a short cut used in the vernacular that by now should have devolved into 'tv', since that is the sense in which we use it. If the writing is formal, the term is television. Informal use begs for 'tv'.”

Indeed, what you are doing is a big help. And I do agree that quibbling and being meticulous for the sake of teaching. That is why it was weird to see 'tv' instead of TV.

Read what I just posted.

⁌ ULY ⁍добавил комментарий 6 years ago

FBI is written in caps because stands for the name Federal Bureau of Investigation. The word “television” is not a name and doesn’t warrant a capital letter in its long form, so it doesn’t logically need one in its shortened form.

Russ Sдобавил комментарий 6 years ago

And yes, while informal use begs for 'tv', people n this community should be consistent with their approach. Since this is a dictionary and people trust your translations (with their lives )))) they would expect a formal use.

⁌ ULY ⁍добавил комментарий 6 years ago

TELEVISION would be a formal word, and tv it’s INformal equivalent. So we’re not talking about formal use, but NORMAL use. Stop trying to teach me English. If you refuse to learn, let others learn.

Russ Sдобавил комментарий 6 years ago

Well, dude, it looks like you will never admit you posted something "slightly incorrect". Instead of saying something like "yea, right, I was just in a hurry typing tv instead of TV..." you are searching the web trying to find some justification. Formal and correct use is TV. Period. No need to google anything.

⁌ ULY ⁍добавил комментарий 6 years ago

TV is a short, informal form. The full form, TELEVISION, would be considered formal. I stand by the spelling “tv” for the reasons stated above.

Russ Sдобавил комментарий 6 years ago

I am not teaching you your native English. Would never dare. But I just have learnt, seeing your reaction, that no one should correct or question your translations here. Sorry if I hurt your feelings.

⁌ ULY ⁍добавил комментарий 6 years ago

You didn’t hurt my feelings - I have a degree in English linguistics and was a top editor for an international publishing house for 35 years. I only here to help, so my feelings are intact. The spelling I stand by, again, is tv.

⁌ ULY ⁍добавил комментарий 6 years ago

You called my attention to my mistake here about tv vs movie and I corrected it. I only care about the quality of English presented here. It’s not personal.

⁌ ULY ⁍добавил комментарий 6 years ago

However, perhaps you would prefer that I stop “helping” altogether and leave it to you?

Russ Sдобавил комментарий 6 years ago

I do not have such impressing experience as you do. But I have a huge experience dealing with people who are NEVER wrong (my wife))). So, I concede.

⁌ ULY ⁍добавил комментарий 6 years ago

I was wrong in this post and I admitted and corrected it. It sounds like YOU’RE the one who won’t give up. You still have posts on here where I have pointed out mistakes and you haven’t done anything about it. You’re not here to learn - you’re here to impress and your English isn’t that impressive (yet).

Russ Sдобавил комментарий 6 years ago

It is nice you wrote "...attention to my mistake here about tv vs movie and I corrected it". So you agreed there was a minor mistake and you corrected it. Why continue arguing over it? The ONLY reason I pointed to 'tv' is because I also care about the quality of English here. Just like you. What is wrong with that?

⁌ ULY ⁍добавил комментарий 6 years ago

I admit that the Russian says MOVIE, and I wrote “tv” - but again, I stand by the spelling “tv” for the reasons I pointed out above.

Russ Sдобавил комментарий 6 years ago

Thanks for pointing that my that English is not impressive. I am here not to impress you. Feel free to point at more shortcomings on my side. This thread seems to be turning personal. Unlike you, you would go low and would not try to offend you. As I said, I have some experience dealing with people who are never wrong. Or people to whom you cannot say they did something wrong/incorrect. Those type of people want to enjoy their righteousness and I am sorry I was on the way. I concede, you were right, I was wrong. Will not happen again.

⁌ ULY ⁍добавил комментарий 6 years ago

Russ, the problem here is that you want me to say that “tv” is wrong and I can’t rightly do that because I consider it correct and I explained why. So we’re at an impasse because you want me to agree to something I didn’t do. I made one mistake - I wrote “tv” instead of “movie” and I admitted and corrected that. What more do you want?

⁌ ULY ⁍добавил комментарий 6 years ago

And what I said is that your English isn’t THAT impressive, meaning that you’re not at the point that you should be correcting a native. You should be LEARNING from him and working on your English. In your last comment alone there are more than a dozen mistakes. Yet you’re still wasting time trying to call me out for something I don’t agree is wrong. What a waste of time and information!
