Indeed, the sentence in Russian is ambiguous. Either that person was thinking outside if the subject they were discussing OR the person has misinterpreted what he was told (the subject). All 4 translation are about the first part.

I agree with Russ S that this phase more likely can be used when a person was not stuck to a subject and "their mind was wandered elsewhere" or more rarely when they did not understand what they was told and did something wrong, so they say: Я не то подумал. (Он думал, что делает все так как нужно, а оказалось нет).

Because with the verb THINK (ABOUT/OF), if you use the simple past, it means я только что придумал кое-что, в смысле, что тебе пришел в голову новый подход/решение к проблеме, и т.д. When you refer to THINK (ABOUT/OF) as a prolonged action, you have to use the progressive.

может Андрей имел ввиду: I have just thought about something else. Sorry. Or doesn't it work out easier?

Егор, «не о том ПОдумал» означает какое-то недопонимание. Если Вы всё-таки имели в виду, что человек отвлёкся и прослушал, что говорит его собеседник, то, наверное, точнее было бы сказать «Я просто задумался/отвлёкся», на худой конец, «... не о том сейчас ДУМАЛ».
