“Not too lucky for Heckle here,” came a voice right next to me, making me flinch from the surprise and jolt around.
This is a reference to a couple of cartoon crows called Heckle and Jeckle. The excerpt is from a Russian novel where they find a mutilated crow hung up by the killer in a public place. The detective is trying to be humorous by calling the crow каркуша, so had to find an analogy in English.
