Is my translation so far-fetched in relation to the Russian? People who want a good workout aren’t necessarily into sports. I don’t play any sport but the occasional tennis match with my brother, but I do work out almost every day. Would that question not apply to me with спорт?

And by the same token, isn’t the place where people just work out and don’t necessarily play sports, called a спортзал?

Спортивный зал - это, вообще говоря, просто закрытая (и теплая) спортивная площадка. Почти во всех городских школах есть спортзал размером с баскетбольную площадку. Там можно играть в баскетбол, волейбол, мини-футбол, бадминтон, заниматься прыжками, акробатикой и т.п. Тренажеров там обычно нет.
С тренажерами для фитнеса - тренажерный зал.

Я бы сказал, нет - разве только если ты занимаешься культуризмом - это тоже своего рода "спорт". Для тенниса тренировка - это игра на теннисном поле, повышение мастерства, возможно с небольшой разминкой на том же поле с какими-то упражнениями.

Uly, does the word “athlete” mean a person in for any kind of sport in English?

Yes, especially competitive sports, but basically any athletic discipline that requires that the participant be in good to excellent physical form.
