Hi,man!Did you use textbooks for learning Russian? Is it necessary in your opinion and experience?

⦿ ULYдобавил комментарий 7 years ago

Hi! First of all, I'm still learning Russian) And yes, initially I used textbooks. I learned in two phases: (1) the grammatical aspect of Russian - all the endings, the cases, and basic vocabulary. The textbook was useful for this because grammar really doesn't change. Vocabulary is another matter, because the words and phrases that people use DO change over time, and a lot of the material in textbooks is outdated. Therefore phase (2) involved interacting with real people, on this site for instance, and learning what is current and what is outdates. Also learning how to distinguish everyday Russian from formal, literary Russian. That's the hardest part because you can't trust what you see in dictionaries.

How long have you been studying English?

Семён Семёновдобавил комментарий 7 years ago

I have been studying it for almost a year, and now I'm preparing for FCE exams, that's why I've asked you about textbooks)

But,I'm not sure whether to learn English with textbooks or not, because of some videos that I've seen recently..

Textbooks should only give you a start in the language. As soon as you can interact with native speakers, that would be the best way to go.

So,your point is that it's better to communicate with native speakers than to drill textbooks in intermidiate or upper-intermidiate levels, right?

More or less. My point is that textbooks will teach you to speak like textbooks, and people will teach you to speak like people.
