I would like to say that in this particular case the use of "a" doesn't sound natural to me. I would honestly use ":" in order to explain the previous statement. As I see it, the first part is about "wonderful and talented people", and the secoond part ia about "photographer Evgenia", implying that she is one of those talented people mentioned before

I think in this case "a" is some sort of intensifier, i.e. "a" = "just" = "как раз".

Uly, to me, « ... ходим в баню по субботам, а вчера ...» sounds worse than " ...приходит много ... людей, а вчера ...» (though it's not the best choice for this sentence either, compared to и как раз вчера; вчера, например). I agree wirh Roman that «a» is used to intensify what they were saying, but only colloquially. You're right, normally we use it to express the contradiction. Обычно мы с друзьями по субботам ходим в баню, а вчера решили порыбачить. What about вот и, it fits perfectly both here and there.

We say «А мы новую машину купили!», «А наш односельчанин стал чемпионом мира по биатлону!» ,«А вчера к нам известный фотограф с дочерью приходила!» when we share some information that is important to us, let's say, boast. So I can presume that the part of the sentence in question is influenced by this colloquial pattern.
As to the reason why "а вчера" sounds more or less natural in the request, but doesn't do in the «а вчера мы славно попарились» may be the different degree of predictability. Their visit to the banya last Saturday was highly predictable - you can't use «а вчера» whereas nobody could predict the day of the visit and the persons to come by - you can say «a вчера», it should be followed by something new to the listener.
