Yet he did not explain any of the differences between the late Ch’ing novel and fiction from the 1910s, when novels and, in particular, short stories frequently elaborated themes of a less public nature in the form of rem- iniscences, love stories, narratives in epistolary form, or diaries conveying the author’s personal feelings and reflections. Lu Hsün’s historical account of Chi nese fiction entirely omitted the 1910s.
