В принципе, почему бы и нет.
И согласен, насчет осторожно. Например, "осторожно проследовал вокруг / в обход"

I don't know if this is reflected in Grumbler's translation, but here's what this all means: (1) PICK doesn't mean "choose" in this context - it means to pick something up or out with one's hands. So the person here is actually picking up pieces of wire, one by one, and moving them out of his way as he proceeds around the huge bale. (2) We use the pattern [(usually) motion] ONE'S WAY [directional] to express slow or difficult progress along a trajectory of any sort: Holding the injured cat in one hand, he SLID his way DOWN the tree with his free arm. The forest was so dense that they had to HACK their way THROUGH with machetes. My Russian is so bad that I have to use a dictionary to DECIPHER my way THROUGH even the simplest message. I hope this makes sense.
