My parents are often upset about me going to bed late at night.

“Often” is weird in that sentence.

The way I see it, in both languages, “often“ goes more logically with going to bed late, than with the parents being mad.

Don’t feel bad, I had to think about it too. Semantically, it’s just not a balanced statement. If it seems strange to you, it’s only because you have good language instincts!

Спасибо! Как ни странно, по-русски так говорят. Я, собственно, благодаря этому вопросу увидела нелогичность данного высказывания.

It’s almost impossible to actually use “often“ in the English version.
It’s just too awkward.
