Igor, TYPE

Here they're referring to a type of person (usually a man), who acts a certain way or has certain characteristics. Women will often refer to men by their appearance or behavior: professor types, surfer types, hold-the-car-door-open-for-you types, etc..

Uli, and what about phrases like"he's a decent kind of guy" then? or am I making that up?

•-<(||=ULY=||)>- •added a comment 8 years ago

Nope, you're not making that up. that's a general description of somebody, which answers the question WHAT KIND OF GUY IS HE. However, you wouldn't normally say "he's the decent type" because it's too general. TYPE is used more for quirks or idiosyncrasies or as Olivia said, to categorize men according to their behaviors. You hear: he's the quiet type, he's the loner type, he's the kill-em-with-kindness type, etc.

thanks again. I think I got it.

What I meant above is that normally we say of things "of the xxx KIND" - although, even here, some people use TYPE. But any native who reads this post, will immediately know that they're talking about a man (even without the definite article, which is important here). I can't tell you why, that's just the way it is. :)

I know what you're talking about. there is that thing about the languages you know well, especially if you're native - you know much more than you can explain =)
