Elena Bogomolovaadded a comment 7 years ago

Now tell me what we call the flesh of the pig

Holy Molyadded a comment 7 years ago

Ladies, it's actually "what DO we call...", there was no mistake.

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 7 years ago

grumbleradded a comment 7 years ago

Yes, there WAS a mistake

Holy Molyadded a comment 7 years ago

Вопрос "what do you/we/etc. call something?" содержит DO.

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 7 years ago

Holy Molyadded a comment 7 years ago

После должна идти запятая, то есть "Now tell me, what do we call...?".
Now tell me, what do you know about this guy? / Now tell me, what do you usually do after work? / Now tell me, what do you want?

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 7 years ago

Can you tell me...?

•-<(||=ULY=||)>- •added a comment 7 years ago

The only mistake here, as Olga pointed out, is the missing comma: Now tell me, what do we call the flesh of a pig?

Holy Molyadded a comment 7 years ago

Thank you, Uly!

grumbleradded a comment 7 years ago

@" now tell me - это просто обращение к слушателю"
А без "now"?

Holy Molyadded a comment 7 years ago

grumbler, если в вопросе стоит "do", то это не ошибка и не опечатка, а нормальный вопрос, где tell me/now tell me/please tell me и так далее отделяется запятой и является обращением.

•-<(||=ULY=||)>- •added a comment 7 years ago

You can separate "(now) tell me" with a comma, a dash or a colon and it doesn't change the fact that the question that follows is a direct question with a normal question syntax: Now tell me, where do I apply for a fishing license? Tell me, what is it you want to know about our company? NOW doesn't mean сейчас, теперь in this context, it just calls the listeners attention to the fact that you have a question.

Elena Bogomolovaadded a comment 7 years ago

Grumbler and me thought that it's a direct order of words (it was a direct order of words? But you said yesterday, if we are talking about the present moment, the sequence of tenses is not applied...)
Like you just wrote: "I don't understand what the confusion is". And we thought in that case the word order should be the same "Tell me what we call the flesh of the pig"

•-<(||=ULY=||)>- •added a comment 7 years ago

Aha, ok. Yeah, "so tell me" and "now tell me" and even "say" are lead-ins to questions and they don't affect the word order or tenses: "So tell me, do your parents live here too?" "Now tell me, what is the square root of 2444?" "Say, do you know what time it is?"

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 7 years ago

Now tell me - А скажи(те)-ка мне...
