COULDN'T FACE simply means that you can't work up the energy to do something that you're just not in the mood for. Another way of saying this is: I was tired and the last thing I wanted was company.

I agree - t's not about entertaining, it's about being in the right state of mind to receive guests or be in the presence of people when you just want to be alone.
