Потому что нет деталей продолжительности, и нет альтернативных способов описать это действие: ехали и приехали. Однако в современном языке, особенно американском passific coast, вполне возможен и тот и другой вариант. Разговорно это вообще звучало бы так: We were on trip since two hour and finally get the gas station.
