Я тут погугли по словарям, начав прямо здесь на Lingvo, и обнаружил, что shift - это на предприятиях, а в школах - это session, причем это может быть как year session, так и day session. По началу усомнился, но когда увидел статьи про "Single Session in schools" и "Double Session in school", пришлось поверить.
Merriam-Webster, значение 5: session - the period during the year or day in which a school conducts classes.
Там же shift: a scheduled period of work or duty: "works the night shift".

Оно в самом деле относится к работе. По отношению к школе звучит очень странно.
Только что спросил у Ули и ссылку на пост дал.. Тут похожие вопросы часто встречаются, надо и самому (или нам), наконец, усвоить. Для меня, например, до сих пор не вполне ясно, как сказать "я учусь" не в смысле "I go to school" вообще, а в какое время.
Александр, если на то пошло, то DURING the first session. Но я никак не успеваю понять, в чем дело. Семестр состоит из целых месяцев. Что такое смена в этом контексте, половина дня?
Ули, а "я учусь в первую / втрую смену"? Я написал "My classes are held the first session", но мне это кажется слишком формальным...
К тому же, опять же, не хватает слова DURING

Что касается DURING, у нас на работе американцы говорили без during:
"What shift is Dmitry working today?", и в словарях тоже пример: "He works the night shift". Думаю, что это же должно оноситься и к session.

Алекс, это же не относится к работе, то есть это не рабочий «шифт» так что необходимо during.

Alex, if they were interviewing people for a position in your company, they would say, for example, "We will be taking application and conducting interviews DURING the morning shift." This tells you WHEN something takes place, not WHAT shift someone is working. In your example, you're telling WHEN the classes are held.

I don’t like it. Study for us is what you do in the library or at home after school. The Russian meaning here corresponds more to “attend class“ or “go to school”
